This episode, Keith revisits the Eclectic Mixtape - this time around he discusses a heavy metal track which the band who wrote it never wants to play live, a breakbeat track that eluded him a few times, an alternative rock / dance hybrid that blew a band up in popularity two years after its release, and a breakbeat monster lurking at the end of a prog/soul album.
In recent years, the Wu Tang Clan have released two albums: the ubiquitous A Better Tomorrow and the unheard Once Upon a Time in Shaolin. A Recent Book, Once Upon a Time in Shaolin – the Untold story of Wu Tang Clan’s Million Dollar Secret Album, the Devaluation of music and America’s new public enemy Number One by Cyrus Bozorgmehr tells the story of the latter record from creation to sale. The book is one of my favorites and a worthwhile purchase, and in thinking about the record again it brought to mind some recent articles and ideas that interest me quite a bit, some of them even touching on the 'why vinyl?' question Sama and I repeatedly return to on the podcast.
Six years ago, Keith was asked (and happily accepted) to put together a mix of blaxploitation-vibe songs made in the 21st century, as Volume 3 of a mix series on Paris DJs.
This is that mix, released six years ago to coincide with Big Pimp Jones' second freestyle album 'Jimmy Ruckus and the Five Fingers of Death'. Keith took a liberty or two and grabbed a song or two from the 90s but in general stayed true to the promise. The mix was specifically done with songs that were readily available at the time and shouldn't be that hard or expensive to track down today. Hope you enjoy!
